Who Supported Us

On the evening of May 6th, I called Tracey Cline and congratulated her on her victory in the Democratic Primary for District Attorney; Ms. Cline ran an outstanding campaign and the election results are the proof of that.

I urge all citizens of Durham County, those who voted for me and those who did not alike, to support Ms. Cline in November and as she assumes office in January 2009.

To all of you who contributed financially to my campaign, endorsed me, wrote letters in support of my candidacy, urged others to vote for me, put up signs, worked the polls, and remembered me in your thoughts and prayers during this campaign, I extend my heartfelt gratitude.

In particular, I would like to thank Randall Stroud and Jimmy Sharpe, two lawyers and friends who sacrificed greatly for my campaign; without them my candidacy would not have been possible.

To paraphrase the jurist who was the inspiration for my candidacy, I am optimistic that one day either the citizenry or the courts will conclude that the effort to eliminate arbitrariness while preserving fairness in the imposition of the death penalty is so doomed to failure that it must be abandoned altogether. While May 6th, 2008 was not that day for the citizenry of Durham County, I, too, share the faith that the day will arrive and I hope and pray that my candidacy and the work of those who supported me will hasten it.
